Nap Time Crafts: Notebook Making

I really like writing on brown paper, and graph paper and square paper. There… I’ve admitted it! I discovered a brown paper notepad I bought in Paris years ago and it gave me the idea – for our second Nap Time Crafts – to make some of my own.

I began by gathering together craft materials left over from other projects, and got experimenting. My list of materials was:

  • Coloured card
  • Tracing paper
  • Brown paper
  • Old Lomography photos
  • Postcards
  • Bakers twine
  • Embroidery thread
  • Stickers
  • Washi tape
  • Paint and paintbrush

As you can probably tell, anything will work, and it’s a good way to recycle scraps.

I started by cutting the paper and card to the size I wanted the notepad to be when it was opened out. Next I chose two photos to form the cover. If you’re using two photos for the cover, fix them together using washi tape.

To bind the pages, I tried two methods. I used thread to stitch the pages together from the middle of the book to the spine of the cover. I then used a running stitch up the length of the book and back down to my starting point. I tied the ends together to finish off.

The second method was using washi tape to stick individual sheets to each other to form the spine.

I finished mine off with a combination of stickers, letters and splatters of paint – but the possibilities are endless.
